Welcome to Reception (Monkey Class)

Class Teacher: Mrs Hogarth

Overview

Welcome to Monkey class, an exciting place where Reception children learn alongside children in Years 1 & 2.

How does it work?

Children in Reception are provided with a wealth of child and adult-initiated activities that support your child's progress in achieving their Early Learning Goals (ELGs).
There are 7 areas of learning and development that shape the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS): this is made up of 3 prime areas and 4 specific areas. Each area of learning is important and inter-connected.

The prime areas are:

  • Communication and Language (C & L)
  • Physical Development (PD)
  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development (PSED)

Children are also supported in four specific areas, whereby the prime areas are strengthened and applied.

The specific areas are:

  • Literacy

  • Mathematics

  • Understanding of the World

  • Expressive Arts and Design

Planning Overview

The children will be covering the same topics as year 1 and 2, although their learning will look a lot different. Many of the activities for Reception use a hands on approach with different activities set up in the areas of continuous provision. Below is an overview of the topics.

Our Classroom

This is our reading corner. The children can access a range of different books including fiction, non fiction, poetry, reading books and traditional tales. The children like to make themselves cosy when they are reading with pillows, cushions and blankets.

The books on the shelves change regularly and link with the topics/ themes that are being taught in the classroom.

We have a 'tricky word' tree, the children choose a word from the tree and see if they can spot it in their book.

The children love to use the creative area. We encourage independence with them choosing their own resources and making lots of different things. The children can use a range of different size and shaped boxes. There are books available to offer suggestions about what they could make.

This is our Class 1 library. The children can borrow books from our library on a weekly basis. This is to promote the love of reading within our school. Children are welcome to take a book and read in our home corner too if they prefer.
