Palm Sunday Walk
Our Palm Sunday Walk was a lovely example of our Christian community coming together to mark the beginning of Holy Week. Unfortunately, due to very poor weather, we were unable to take part in the first leg of the planned walk. However, this did not dampen our spirit.
We were able to walk together from St John’s Church to Pilling Methodist Church, where we were warmly welcomed. This shared journey was a meaningful reminder of Jesus’ own journey into Jerusalem and the importance of unity, faith, and perseverance, even when plans need to change.
Thank you to everyone who took part and to our friends at Pilling Methodist Church for their hospitality. It was a special opportunity to walk together in faith and strengthen our community bonds.
Stations of the Cross
All the children in Class 2 attended the Stations of the Cross in church alongside family members, parishioners, and governors. They prayed at each station, reflecting on Jesus’ final journey. For some children, this experience prompted thoughtful questions and reflections, which were shared on their return to school.
Lenten Lunch
As part of our Lenten journey, the school hosted a Lenten lunch for parents, carers, and members of the wider community. The event encouraged everyone to think and eat simply, helping the children to reflect on the needs of those less fortunate than ourselves. The lunch also served as a fundraiser for CAFOD, enabling the school community to put faith into action by supporting others locally and globally. This experience strengthened pupils’ understanding of Catholic Social Teaching, particularly compassion, generosity, and service to others.Lent
Easter Play - Resurrection Rock
Year 3 and 4 performed The Passion – Resurrection Rock, supported confidently by pupils from Year 5 and 6. The performance helped the children to deepen their understanding of the Easter story and express their faith creatively through drama and song. A small number of parents and carers, alongside children in Class 1 and Nursery, joined us to watch this important celebration of Jesus’ Passion and Resurrection, strengthening the link between home, school, and parish.
Mother's Day
To celebrate Mother’s Day, mums and other special women were invited into school to share lunch with the children. Guided by the Catholic understanding of love, service, and vocation, the children took great care in welcoming and pampering their guests, showing gratitude and respect for those who nurture and support them. This celebration reinforced the importance of family life and helped the children to recognise love as a gift from God, strengthening relationships between home, school, and parish.
R.E. Transfiguration Art – Year 5 and 6
In R.E., we have been studying the event of the Transfiguration, when God appeared through Jesus. We explored the story and discussed its meaning. We also looked at different pieces of artwork inspired by the Transfiguration and created our own interpretations, using colour, light, and symbolism to express what the event means to us.
Fairtrade Conference
Some of our pupils took part in a Fairtrade conference, where they learned about the importance of fairness, justice, and respect for the dignity of every person. Through a Catholic lens, the children explored how choosing Fairtrade supports farmers and workers around the world, ensuring they receive fair wages and safe working conditions. This experience helped the children understand how we are called, as Catholics, to love our neighbours, care for God’s creation, and put our faith into action by making responsible choices that support those less fortunate than ourselves.
Valentine's Day
As we celebrated Valentine’s Day in the half-term, we took the opportunity beforehand to help our children understand that love is much more than cards, flowers, or sweets. In our Catholic tradition, love is rooted in the example of Jesus.
Jesus teaches us:
“Love one another as I have loved you” (John 13:34).
This reminds us that real love is shown through kindness, forgiveness, patience, and care for others.
Throughout Valentine’s Day, the children have been learning that loving like Jesus means sharing, helping those in need, including others, and treating everyone with respect. We talked about how Jesus’ love is for everyone and how even small acts of kindness can make a big difference.
Valentine’s Day reminds us that love is a choice we make every day. By following Jesus’ example, we encourage our children to grow not only in knowledge but also in compassion, empathy, and faith.
St Bernard's Carol Service
Some children from the school, along with their families, attended the Carol Concert at St Bernard, joining the parish community to celebrate the joy and message of Christmas through prayer and song.
Advent Wreath
The children worked alongside Mrs Billington, a grandparent, to make an Advent wreath, learning about the meaning of the symbols used, including the candles, greenery, and their connection to the season of Advent. This practical activity helped the children to deepen their understanding of preparation and hope as we await the coming of Jesus. The Advent wreaths were then used during our Celebration of the Word, supporting prayerful reflection and enriching the children’s experience of liturgy.
Remembrance Sunday
To mark Remembrance Sunday, the children took part in a time of prayer and reflection, remembering all those who have lost their lives in war and conflict. Through discussion and quiet prayer, the children reflected on themes of sacrifice, peace, and reconciliation, rooted in the Catholic call to love one another and work for peace. This act of remembrance helped the children to develop respect, gratitude, and an understanding of the importance of peace in our world.
Samaritan Posters
Class 1 listened to and discussed the parable of the Good Samaritan, reflecting on its message of love and compassion for others. The children considered how they could be more like the Good Samaritan in their own lives and how they might change their behaviour to show kindness, care, and respect for those around them. They created posters that were displayed around the school to act as a reminder for the children.
Crowning of Mary
The school community came together for the Crowning of Mary, with parishioners and family members joining us to share in this special act of devotion. This meaningful celebration honoured Mary as the Mother of Jesus and deepened the children’s understanding of her importance within the Catholic faith. It was the first time the Crowning of Mary has been celebrated in school for a number of years, and following its success, we are pleased to now make this a valued annual event, strengthening our links with the parish and wider community.
Harvesting our Vegetables
As part of our learning inspired by Laudato Si’, the children have been harvesting vegetables and reflecting on how we can look after God’s world. Through this hands‑on experience, they have learned that caring for creation is an important part of our faith and a way of showing gratitude for God’s gifts.
Harvesting the vegetables helped the children understand where food comes from and why it is important to respect, protect, and nurture the Earth. By taking responsibility for our garden, we are living out Pope Francis’ message in Laudato Si’, reminding us that we are all called to be stewards of God’s creation.
CAFOD Big Walk
We were delighted to take part in the Big Walk, raising money for CAFOD and supporting their vital work with communities around the world. The event gave us the opportunity to live out our faith by putting love into action, helping those in need through generosity and solidarity.
By walking together, we reflected on the importance of standing with others and answering Jesus’ call to care for our global neighbours. Thank you to everyone who supported the event through encouragement, donations, and participation. Your generosity will help CAFOD continue their mission of bringing hope, dignity, and practical support to those most in need.
Dress as a Saint Day
As part of our celebration of All Saints’ Day, a number of children took part in a ‘Dress as a Saint Day’. The children dressed as a saint of their choice and shared information about their chosen saint with others in school. This helped the children to learn about holy role models and understand how saints lived lives of faith, service, and love of God and others. The activity encouraged confidence in speaking, deepened knowledge of the Communion of Saints, and inspired the children to think about how they can follow the example of the saints in their own lives.
Remembrance Sunday
To mark Remembrance Sunday, the children spent time in prayer and reflection, remembering those who have lost their lives in war. They reflected on sacrifice and the Catholic call to work for peace.
Opening the Jubilee Year
We opened the Jubilee Year with a special assembly, spending time reflecting on what it means to be Pilgrims of Hope. Together, we thought about how we can carry this message throughout the coming year by showing kindness, offering forgiveness, caring for others, and trusting in God’s love. The assembly encouraged us all to see the Jubilee Year as a shared journey, where even small, everyday actions can bring hope to our school and wider community.
